Effect of CCC and Phosfon on Growth - Retarding Activity in Certain Horticultural Plants

Abstract
Pot-culture studies of 7 different ornamental plants for CCC treatment and 6 different vegetable plants for Phosfon treatment were made in the field, and the following results were obtained;
CCC application generally retarded height growth and dry-matter production of certain ornamental plants, depending on kind of plants used, without modifying their flowering characteristics. Decrease in the dry weight with the retardant treatment as compared with control was considered to be due to the reduction in the stem length.
Phosfon application likewise retarded the height growth and dry-matter production in certain vegetable plants, while it promoted them in some other plants or almost without effect. However the application in all bases resulted in plants having much darker foliages than that of control.
It was felt therefore that application of the growth retartlants for suppressing plant height for specific ornamental purpose would be highly useful, and further investigation may be necessary to evaluate the usefulness of the growth retardants for vegetable plants, since vegetable production generally demands weight production rather than height growth.
